California officially certifies interpreters for American Sign Language (ASL) and 12 spoken languages: Arabic, Cantonese, Eastern Armenian, Farsi (Persian), Filipino (Tagalog), Korean, Mandarin, Portuguese, Punjabi (India), Russian, Spanish, and Vietnamese. For other languages, interpreters are credentialed as "registered" interpreters.
